A Miniature Gear Hobbing Machine for Clocks and Watches

Copyright 2012 by James P. Riser

I picked this little curiosity up this afternoon. It is an old gear hob for watch or clock wheels. It is in amazingly good condition and missing only a screw, one nut, and one spring. It is sitting atop a small McDonald's paper cup to illustrate size.

I'll need to machine up a few hobs to fit this little gem. It is made to be run by some sort of motor. The small gear turns as the hob cuts. It's actually pretty cool. There is no maker's name anywhere on the machine.

I thought some of you antique types might like to see it. Enjoy.

BTW... Does anybody know exactly what the hobs looked like or will I need to experiment?

If you look closely, you can see the tiny gear in position to be cut. In another picture I have removed the gear to show its size and location on the machine. The large threaded shaft is where the hob mounts. I'll need to machine an authentic looking nut for this shaft.
